Reflections on a commemorative event: Total Defense Day

15 February marks the British surrender of Singapore to the Japanese during the World War 2. This annual event reminds us that the task of nation-building is not easy, and that we must work to preserve our present prosperity and stability.

On this special day, our school had an assembly programme on the Total Defence Day. Various uniform groups put up performances for the whole school. The National Cadet Corps put up a performance and a short skit to remind us that it is our responsibility to protect our own country. They also performed to us the free style drills which were awesome. The National Police Cadet Corps also did a short video clip to remind us to beware of theft cases and gave us some tips on how to present ourselves from being the victim of theft case.  During CCE lesson, videos were shown to us and we are asked to write reflection too.

Overall, it was a memorable day that taught me a lot.

Narrative (Draft 1)

Narrative (Draft 1)

“Oh my god, it’s getting warmer and warmer these days!” whined Molly, the boar. “I agree with you, Molly! This is definitely the humans fault! Remember the tall and strong tree that gave use shelter, gave us home? It’s the humans! The humans! I even lost my home…” Ricky, the squirrel complained. They started talking about the past, about what all the animals in the forest used to have and how the environment in the past used to be like.

In the past, there were about five tall and strong old trees that provide all the animals in the forest with shade and shelter. The humongous trees gave the squirrels’ home, allow the birds to build nest and provided all flying animals to rest on their branches when they are tired. They prove shelter when it rains; they provide shade when the sun hits the animals. They helped the animals, provide the animals with all they can without moaning and whining. You can never hear them complain about their life.

Their nobility was appreciated much till the day the humans came and bring them away. The sounds of the vehicles dashing into the forest scared the animals away. The squirrels and birds could depict the whole incident clearly. Everything was flashing crystal clear in their mind. The men setup the instruments; one of them locked himself in the square area and pressed a button. It started to rise up high to the longest and thickest branch where the birds’ nest was. He took out a saw and started to chop the branch; the mother bird carried her children and started flying away. All the think branches were chopped within minutes.

Next, the man presses the button and lowered down, he unlocked himself. He took larger equipment; the shiny blades reflected the sun’s ray shining brightly. The man knocks it against the tree trunk. The tree was too stubborn and the man signal to another man who was already prepared waiting for command. He moved the machine forward, the blade connected to it was huge. This time, he did not use much strength, the trunk was chopped off. Before the trunk falls to the ground, the squirrels manage to run out of their house. This cycle repeats to all the other tall trees.

The animals lost their home and their shade in a blink of an eye, with the cause of humans. “This is how global temperature rises, causing global warming. It is all caused by the humans!” Chirpy, the bird chipped agitatedly. Years later, the trees were fully grown and the humans came again. This time, the animals worked together and they followed their plans that they made closely. This had become the last time the humans came. The animals were back to the past where everything was in place. 124 years later, global warming had stopped totally. The earth was saved.

What are the challenges faced by parents today?

Parents are facing problems everyday in their daily lives, no matter if is something to do with their work or their child. Parents always wanted to give the best to their child. However, the children do not understand and they do not appreciate for what their parents provide them with.

Parents nowadays believed that education is the most important for their child. Which parent does not want their child to excel in their studies? Which parent does not want to see their child succeed in life? Parent faces challenges such as providing the child with tuition which is believed to help the child better cope with their studies. However, some children simple do not appreciate and thinks that tuition is useless and a waste of time. Often, parents have to think of ways to persuade their child to attend tuition lesson. Thus, challenges faced by the parents are usually communication.

Children nowadays are allowed to go home alone after school at a very young age. Without the guidance of the parents, children tend to mix with the wrong company and have a drastic change in life. For example, a classmate of mine was allowed to go home herself at the age of eight where we are only primary two. As time goes by, she had more and more freedom. She mixed with the wrong company and her studies drop dramatically. Thus, one of the challenges faced by the parents is the insufficient time spent with their child.

Some parents also spoilt their child by getting them whatever they wanted, and the child simply takes things for granted. For instance, some children were given a hand phone at a very young age of six to seven years old. Between the age of six and seven, there is not a need for children to carry a hand phone with them as their parents are tagging with them around all the time. There is no reason for them to carry a hand phone as there is no one else they can contact. However, some children tend to throw tantrum at their parents and the parents have no idea what to do but satisfying their children with what they want. Hence, parents face challenges not to spoil their child with all the latest item and electronic gadgets, at the same time making their children happy.

The problems and challenges faced by parents are a lot more than what I had mentioned above. It is really hard for parents to create a win-win situation for both sides. This happens especially to parents who are working from day to night. They could hardly spend time with their family and friends, including their child. Family contact time is really important; however parents tend to neglect this and it leads to family problems.

Dear Kimberley,
How are you? Are you in the pink of health? How’s life in Indonesia? It’s been a long time since we last met. I’ve heard that uncle is sending you over to Singapore for tertiary education. I’m writing to you to recommend a polytechnic in Singapore.

I would like to recommend you to enroll yourself into Ngee Ann Polytechnics. This is because; Ngee Ann Polytechnics is one of the top polytechnics in Singapore and they offer a variety of courses and co-curriculum activities.

There are two possible courses that you would be interested. They are, Chinese Media and Communication and learning about technology like engineering innovative aids for patients. I remember that your Chinese was really good although you’re living in Indonesia. Chinese Media and communication will suit your ability. It is about creating applications that helps others understand how we like to live, eat and talk in Singapore. The two courses mentioned above are suitable for extroverts like you.

There are also many other things that you will be able to learn in Ngee Ann polytechnics. For example, you can take up other languages. As I know, you’re Korean pop fans, and I believe that you will be interested in learning the language, Korean. An Ngee Ann polytechnic provides the learning of Korean language which other school does not. You will definitely enjoy yourself in Ngee Ann polytechnics as there will be exciting facilities coming on the way.

Lastly, I hope my suggestions will be helpful. Hope to see you soon!

With love,
Lay Hoon

Dear Prime Minister Singh,
Disappointment in how the police mishandled the rape incident
I am writing to you to express my disappointment towards the mishandling of the recent rape case that happened in New Delhi. It has sparked nationwide protests. At the same time, many people including myself are very aghast with how the police in India handled this case.

I strongly feel that the police in India do not have any sense of urgency. For example, the recent gang rape in New Delhi had showed us that police in India handled exigent cases in a sluggish way. It was reported on the news that a friend of the rape victim who had witnessed the cruel tragedy told the reporter, they were both seriously injured, but no one attended to them. Not even the police officer. He also added that the police delayed the time by arguing over who had the jurisdiction instead of sending the naked and bloodied couple to the hospital.

Moreover, I am very disappointed with how women are treated in India. Women are not equally treated as man. For instance, women are banned from using hand phones, wear jeans, shorts and even t-shirts. It was said to prevent love affairs, elopement and rape cases. However, both love affairs and elopement involve both genders, but why are the males not banned for any of the above? In fact, by introducing such laws only makes females in India inferior. Women play an important role in the society. Without women, who is going to cook, clean, and take care of the children? Who is going to bear the pain when giving birth?  I suggest that you can actually implement laws that are fair to all and not biased in favor of the males.

Furthermore, I feel that stricter laws should be enforced to decrease the number of crimes in your country. I also feel that rapist should be severely punished so as to serve as a warning to the public that raping is a serious offence, at the same time decreasing the number of rape cases. I suggest that you can actually implement severe punishment such as life imprisonment, chemical castration and death penalty. I believe such punishment could stop rape from happening in future, allowing your female citizen to live in peace and not living in tenterhooks.

Lastly, I hope that you will looked into these problems and make improvement to the judicial system in India. I also hope that in the near future, both males and females will be treated equally. In addition, I hope that you can raise awareness of the public and educate females on how to protect themselves so as to prevent them from becoming the next rape victim. I strongly believe that you are a good prime minister and you will not allow such crimes to be committed in your country. Likewise, I trust that you will definitely make great changes to your country, bringing India to a greater height. I looked forward to see changes in the life of women in India.

Yours sincerely,

Ng Lay Hoon
