Formal Letter (Draft 2)

Dear Prime Minister Singh,

Disappointment in how the police mishandled the rape incident

The rape incident that happened in New Delhi had been spread worldwide, causing outpouring of criticism of the police in India. Many people are very disappointed with how the police in India handled this case, include myself. I am writing this to tell you how disappointed I am about the way police in India handled such cases.

Firstly, I felt that the police in India do not have any sense of urgency. Example, the recent rape case that happened in New Delhi showed us that police in India handled exigent cases in a sluggish way. It was reported on the news that the friend of the rape victim who had witness the tragedy said that both himself and the victim were seriously injured. However, when the police arrived at the scene, they delayed the time by arguing over who had the jurisdiction instead of sending the naked and bloodied couple to the hospital.

Secondly, I felt that the police in India handled rape cases hastily. It had been mentioned that in the past, rape victims were asked to marry the rapist instead of the rapist being punished. It sounded so ridiculous to many people around the world. We are already in the 21st century and yet the judicial system of India is moving at a very slow pace. Have you ever thought about how the rape victims felt if they were to marry off to the rapist who had once hurt them? Could you imagine if one of them was your daughter? I suggest you to introduce punishment to deal with rapist, such as death sentence and chemical castration.

Thirdly, I am very disappointed with how the women in India are treated. Women were banned from using hand phones, wearing jeans, shorts and even t-shirts. It was said to reduce love affair, elopement and rape cases. Does it really help to decrease the number of rape cases? Even if it does, both love affairs and elopement involves both genders, but why are they not banned from using headphones? In fact, by doing this, it only makes the females in India inferior. I suggest that you can actually implement laws that are fair for all and not biased to the males.

Lastly, I hope that you will look into these problems and make changes to the judicial system in India and have better treatment towards the women in your country. I also hope you will be able to improve on the way police handle rape cases. In addition, I hope that you could raise awareness of the public and educate the females on how to protect themselves from becoming a rape victim.

Yours sincerely,

Lay Hoon

Friendly Letter (Draft 2)

Dear Amanat,

I’ve heard about your rape in New Delhi from the news and I feel really sorry for you. I hope you’re happier where you’re now. I just want to tell you that your death is never in vain.

Firstly, your death has cast a spotlight on the status of women in India, allowing the whole world to understand how inferior females are as compared to males in India. Although the world had entered a new era, most women in India are still not educated and therefore, unable to hold a prestigious job. Instead, they are only given physically difficult and undesirable jobs. Your death had sparked a furor in India, and people are fighting for women’s rights, asking for tougher rape laws.

Secondly, your case has proven to the whole wide world that the police in India handle rape cases with no sympathy.  In an article, your friend who had witness your tragedy said that police arrived at the scene and delayed for two hours before both of you were sent to the hospital. However, your death allowed the India police force to reflect on them and they are now enforcing stricter laws to protect the women in India to prevent such adversity to happen again. Police also have to go through intensive sensitization programme which aim at inculcating greater responsibility and appropriate approach towards rape victims.

Lastly, your death also encourages rape victims to come forward to seek justice. In the past, rape victims were seen as ‘dirty’ and were discriminated. No one cares about how much they suffered and the mental trauma caused by the rapist. Therefore, victims tend to keep their unfortunate past to themselves to prevent themselves from being looked down by others. However, because of your death, many people around the world had realized how frequent rape occurs in India, and also encouraged rape victims to come out and seek justice for themselves, at the same time punishing their tormentors.

Your death is not in vain. In fact, you allowed the society to understand how much a rape victim and her family had suffered. At the same time, allow the society to change their views towards rape victims and treat them with respect.

Yours sincerely,

Lay Hoon
